905 STIFLE VIPERS IN VICTORY

Mississauga — Facing the league’s second best offence, Raptors 905 (28-9) limited Rio Grande Valley (23-15) to 93 points, defeating the Vipers 104-93 Monday night.  The 905 held Rio Grande to their second-lowest point total this season, forcing the team to a .356 field goal percentage on the evening.  CJ Leslie propelled the 905 with 20 points and nine rebounds while Kyle Wiltjer scored a game-high 24 points for the Vipers.  

Rio began the game poised for another solid offensive outing, outscoring the 905 32-20 in the first quarter.  Wiltjer started the game off strong scoring eight points in the frame, a total matched by his counterpart Leslie.  Secondary scoring from JP Tokoto and Gary Payton II, both contributing six points, gave Rio the edge in the quarter. 

Both offences would struggle in the second frame, combining to shoot 29.8 per cent from the floor.  The 905 would edge the Vipers in the quarter 20-16, but trail 48-40 headed into halftime. After 24 minutes of play, Leslie led all scorers with 12 points for the 905, while Wiltjer and Payton II led the Vipers with 10 points apiece in the first half.  

Coming out of halftime the 905 would shoot 52.2 per cent in the third on the strength of Brady Heslip connecting from three-point range four times, scoring 12 points for the 905 and leading the team within two points headed to the final 12 minutes of play.   

Wiltjer would add nine points to his total in the fourth but the Vipers were unable to hold onto their lead as Raptors 905 rallied behind John Jordan’s 10 points to secure the come from behind victory.  E.J. Singler added nine fourth quarter points, while Edy Tavares contributed six points, six rebounds, and four blocks in the period to seal the victory.
