GRAND RAPIDS – The Grand Rapids Drive (16-16) ended Raptors 905 (22-8) 17-game road winning streak dating back to last season, earning a 122-115 victory Saturday evening. Three of the Drive’s five starters scored 25+ points, highlighted by Michael Gbinije’s 29-point, nine rebound effort. Axel Toupane scored 25 points off the bench for the 905 while Brady Heslip recorded 22 points in the loss.
The 905 began the game strong, racing out to a 31-24 advantage after the first quarter. EJ Singler scored nine points in the opening frame, while Edy Tavares collected six of his 10 rebounds in the first.
The second quarter was a high scoring affair with the Drive edging the 905 36-34 in the frame. Henry Ellenson, on assignment from Detroit, scored a quarter-high 10 points for Grand Rapids.
Opening the second half the two teams played a tightly contested 12 minutes, Grand Rapids again narrowly outscoring Raptors 905 28-25 in the quarter. Assignment players would lead the way in the frame, Michael Gbinije scoring eight points for the Drive, while Bruno Caboclo scored seven points for the 905. Headed into the fourth quarter, Raptors 905 held a slim 90-88 advantage.
The game would remain tightly contested to the final whistle as no lead grew greater than eight in the final frame. At the 4:18 mark of the fourth, the Drive went on a 9-0 run to take a two-point lead. After a brief deadlock at 109 apiece, the Drive would sink two consecutive three-pointers to take a lead they would not relinquish.
The team’s last road loss was February 23, 2016 against Iowa…Raptors 905 are now 11-1 on the road this season…This is the first loss for Raptors 905 this season when leading after three quarters (20-1)…EJ Singler recorded his first double-double of the season (14 points, 10 rebounds).
